Description

A displayport 1.4 cable carries 8K at 60Hz, 4K at 144Hz and 1440p at 240Hz from a computer to a monitor, over a braided lead with aluminium housings. Five lengths, from half a metre to five.

What a displayport 1.4 cable actually gives you

32.4Gbps of bandwidth, which is the number everything else follows from.

  • 8K (7680 × 4320) at 60Hz with Display Stream Compression
  • 4K at 144Hz, which is the specification gamers buy this for
  • 1440p at 240Hz, HDR, 10-bit colour and multi-channel audio

⭐ The one worth understanding is 4K at 144Hz. HDMI 2.0 tops out at 4K 60Hz, so on a high-refresh 4K monitor a displayport 1.4 cable is how you reach the rated speed. HDMI often caps it silently at 60Hz and nothing on screen tells you.

⚠️ Check both ends, not just the cable

A displayport 1.4 cable cannot create bandwidth the two ends do not have.

Your graphics card needs a DisplayPort 1.4 output — anything from roughly 2016 onward has one — and your monitor needs a matching input. Plenty of monitors sold as “4K 144Hz” have one DisplayPort socket and three HDMI ones.

⚠️ And the refresh rate is not automatic. Windows and macOS default a new monitor to 60Hz even when the hardware can do more. Set it in display settings after plugging the displayport 1.4 cable in, or you will own a 144Hz monitor running at 60 and never know.

Daisy-chaining, which a HDMI lead cannot do at all

DisplayPort 1.4 supports Multi-Stream Transport, so a monitor with a DisplayPort output can feed a second screen, on one lead back to the computer.

⭐ On a two-screen desk that is one displayport 1.4 cable instead of two, with no HDMI equivalent. The catch: both monitors need a DisplayPort output, not just an input — and most consumer monitors do not have one.

The displayport 2.1 cable option, and who it is for

Most of these are DisplayPort 1.4 — 8K 60Hz, 4K 144Hz and everything below. The 16K option is a different and faster cable: a displayport 2.1 cable, rated 80Gbps against 1.4’s 32.4.

⭐ For almost everyone the 1.4 version is the right one. It drives every 4K 144Hz gaming monitor and every 8K display on the market, and costs less.

⚠️ A displayport 2.1 cable only earns its price if both ends can use it — a DisplayPort 2.x graphics card and a monitor with a matching input. Plugged into 1.4 hardware it behaves exactly like the displayport 1.4 cable and you have paid for headroom you cannot reach.

⭐ Where it does earn it: uncompressed 4K at 240Hz, 8K at 120Hz, and dual-monitor runs that would otherwise need DSC. Tell us the card and the monitor and we will say which you need.

⚠️ Length, and what it does and does not change

0.5m, 1m, 2m, 3m and 5m.

At 4K 60Hz every length here is comfortable. At 4K 144Hz or 8K the longer runs work near the top of what passive copper does.

⭐ Take the shortest length that reaches. A 3m displayport 1.4 cable behind a desk is fine; a 5m run driving a 4K 144Hz panel is the one to ask us about first.

The braid is not decoration

Nylon braid over the jacket, aluminium housings, gold-plated contacts, on both the 1.4 and the displayport 2.1 cable options.

⭐ Video cables fail at the neck, where the lead meets the connector. The braid and the moulded strain relief stop that — behind a monitor for a decade, that is one purchase instead of three.

What we are not claiming

That it makes a 60Hz monitor run at 144. The panel sets the ceiling; a displayport 1.4 cable only has to get out of the way.

That the picture looks different from a cheaper cable that also carries the signal. Digital video either arrives intact or visibly breaks up — you are buying construction and headroom, not a better-looking image.

Graphics cards with a DisplayPort 1.4 output

  • NVIDIA GeForce — GTX 10 series onward, and every RTX generation
  • AMD Radeon — RX 400 series onward, including the RX 6000 and 7000 ranges
  • Intel Arc and Intel integrated graphics with a DisplayPort output
  • Workstation cards — NVIDIA Quadro and RTX A-series, AMD Radeon Pro
  • Desktops, laptops and docking stations with a full-size DisplayPort socket
  • Games consoles — ⚠️ neither PlayStation nor Xbox has a DisplayPort output; those are HDMI only

Monitors it drives

Any display with a DisplayPort 1.4 input, including 4K 144Hz gaming panels, 8K displays, ultrawides at high refresh, and 1440p 240Hz monitors.

Also DisplayPort 1.2 monitors, which will run at their own maximum rather than the cable’s.

What decides the result

The lower of the two ends. A DisplayPort 1.4 cable between a 1.2 graphics card and a 1.4 monitor runs at 1.2 speeds, and the same the other way round. Tell us the graphics card and the monitor and we will tell you what the pair will actually do.
