A charger for Suunto 5 is the part that quietly decides whether a watch you have owned for years keeps earning its place on your wrist. It is a direct replacement for the clip-on lead that came in the box, and it covers a wide slice of the Suunto range — the 5, the 3, and the whole Ambit and Traverse family.
There is no magnet here, and that is the point. The 5, 3 and Ambit watches charge through flat contact pads on the back of the case, and this charger for Suunto 5 uses a sprung clamp that grips the case and presses spring-loaded pins onto those pads. Push it on until it seats and it stays put — it will not slide off if the cable is nudged, which is the failing of a magnetic lead on this style of watch. If a charger has ever dropped off overnight and left you with a flat battery in the morning, the clip is the fix.
Suunto used this clip design across an unusually long run of models, which means a charger for Suunto 5 Peak and an Ambit charger are the same physical part. Useful if there is more than one Suunto in the house, or you kept the old watch as a backup. The same lead serves the 5, 5 Peak, 3 and 3 Fitness, every Ambit from the original through the Ambit3 Vertical, plus the Spartan Trainer, Traverse and Kailash.
So a suunto 3 charger and a charger for Suunto 5 Peak are not different products — they are this one. Buy a single charger for Suunto 5 Peak and you have also bought the spare for the Ambit in the drawer and the suunto 3 charger for whoever inherited it.
This charger for Suunto 5 delivers 5V at 0.7A, which is exactly what these watches are designed to take. That matters more on older hardware than on new: an Ambit3 or an original Suunto 5 is running a battery that has already done several hundred cycles, and feeding it the current it expects is how you get the most out of what is left. A charger for Suunto 5 Peak and a suunto 3 charger are the same electronics for the same reason.
The cable also carries short-circuit, overcharge, overcurrent and overvoltage protection, so a cheap wall plug or an unfamiliar USB port does not become the watch’s problem. The one-metre USB-A lead is PVC-jacketed and plugs into any powered USB source — wall adapter, laptop, power bank or car.
Suunto has used several charging systems and they do not interchange. This clip-style lead covers the 5, 5 Peak, 3, Ambit, Spartan Trainer, Traverse and Kailash generation. The 9 Peak, 9 Peak Pro, Race, Vertical and Ocean use a magnetic connector instead, the Suunto Run has its own again, and the Wing and Sonic headphones another. If your watch has a magnet rather than flat pads, this is not the lead — check the compatibility list below, and we stock the one that fits.
