Your phone stopped having a headphone socket. Your headphones did not stop working.
Most USB-C audio dongles are passive. They are a plug, a socket and a few centimetres of wire, and they rely on the phone doing the conversion — taking the digital audio, turning it into an analogue signal and pushing it out of the USB-C port.
A lot of phones simply do not do that. Current Google Pixels do not. Newer Samsung Galaxy S handsets do not. They shipped without a headphone socket and without the analogue path that would let a passive dongle stand in for one. Plug a passive one in and you get silence, and nothing on the packet warned you.
This one carries its own converter. The DAC chip inside does the digital-to-analogue conversion itself, so the phone never has to. That is the whole reason a usb c to 3.5mm adapter costs more than a couple of dollars, and it is why this works on a handset where a passive dongle does nothing at all.
It is a digital-to-analogue converter, sitting in the moulding behind the USB-C plug. Your phone sends it a digital stream over USB. The chip turns that into the analogue signal headphones need and drives them with it.
Your phone’s own audio hardware is out of the loop entirely, which is what makes this a converter rather than a plug with a different shape — and why a usb c to 3.5mm dac adapter works on essentially any modern device with a USB-C port, rather than only the handsets that kept the old analogue path alive.
This is the Xiaomi part, not a copy of it. That matters less for the badge than for what sits behind it: a manufacturer with its own audio silicon, consistent parts between batches, and a moulding that has been through a proper tooling process rather than a trade-show sample.
What it does not mean is that it only works with Xiaomi phones. It is a standard USB-C audio device and it works with any handset, tablet or laptop that has a USB-C port. Some of the most common buyers for a xiaomi dac are people with Pixels and Galaxies, precisely because those are the phones where a passive dongle fails.
We are not going to tell you it sounds better than physics allows. It converts cleanly, it drives normal headphones to a sensible volume, and it does that consistently. For audiophile listening on high-impedance cans you want a headphone amplifier, and we will say so rather than sell you this instead.
Two colours, same part. Black disappears against a phone; white matches the Xiaomi and Apple accessory palette if that is the drawer it lives in.
It is short on purpose — long enough to reach from a pocket, short enough not to become the thing that catches on a car door.
This is written and sold as an audio-out product. Whether the converter also passes a microphone back from a headset is not something we will claim until the manufacturer confirms it in writing. If taking calls is what you need it for, ask us first and we will find out rather than let you discover it.
Stocked in Melbourne, not drop-shipped with a three-week wait. Order before 10am and it ships the same day via Australia Post with tracking and insurance, backed by our 90-day warranty and a team who will tell you honestly when a cheaper part would do the same job.
Your headphones still work. Order today and give them somewhere to plug in.
Plugs into any device with a USB-C port:
What plugs into the other end: any headphones, earbuds or headset with a standard 3.5mm plug.
It is not a Xiaomi-only accessory. It presents as a standard USB-C audio device and works with any handset, tablet or laptop that has a USB-C port.
No driver, no app, no pairing. The converter is powered from the USB-C port and identifies itself as an audio device the moment it is connected.
Any USB-C port will do. Nothing to negotiate — no DP Alt Mode requirement, no minimum power delivery, no host feature to check. If the port is USB-C, this works.
On phone calls: this is sold as an audio-out product. Whether the converter passes a microphone from a headset is unconfirmed, and we will not claim it until the manufacturer states it. Ask us and we will check before you order.
