A small metal adapter that lets a 3.5mm headphone plug go into a 2.5mm socket. One end plugs into the device, your headphones plug into the other — nothing to charge, nothing to configure.
This is the single most common mistake on adapters, so it goes first.
This one is 2.5mm male to 3.5mm female. In plain terms: your device has the small 2.5mm socket, and your headphones have the ordinary 3.5mm plug. The adapter’s small pin goes into the device; your headphones go into the wider socket on the adapter.
If your device has the ordinary 3.5mm socket and your headset has the small 2.5mm plug, you need the opposite part — we stock that one too, so tell us which way round you are and we will send the right one.
A quick way to tell: 2.5mm is noticeably slimmer than a standard headphone plug — about the thickness of a paperclip wire against a pencil lead. If you are not sure, measure the plug you are holding, or send us a photo.
Older phones and handsets. 2.5mm was the standard mobile headset socket for years before 3.5mm took over, and plenty of those devices are still in service.
Cordless phone and office headsets, which used 2.5mm long after phones moved on, and many still do.
Two-way radios and older camcorders, where 2.5mm sockets remain common.
Some portable music players, where a 2.5mm socket carries a balanced output — though see the caution below, because that case is different.
It passes the signal through. It does not improve it. Any listing promising better sound from a passive adapter is describing something that cannot happen — at best a 2.5 mm to 3.5 mm adapter is transparent, and every extra connector pair in a chain is a small loss rather than a gain. What it buys you is that your existing headphones work at all.
⚠️ It does not rewire anything either. If the socket and the plug carry their channels on different contacts — which happens with headsets that have a microphone, and with balanced 2.5mm outputs on audio players — a plain adapter will not correct that. You may get sound on one side only, no microphone, or in the balanced case a connection you should not make at all.
So the safe rule: this is for ordinary stereo listening. If your device or headset has a microphone or a balanced output, tell us what it is before you order and we will confirm whether this is the right part.
Because the alternative is replacing headphones that are working perfectly well. An adapter costs a fraction of a new pair, and it lives in a bag or a glovebox until the day it is needed.
And because it is the kind of thing nobody buys until they need it urgently — usually the night before a trip, when a headset turns out not to fit. A 2.5 to 3.5 mm jack adapter is a two-dollar problem that becomes a hundred-dollar problem at the wrong moment.

Direction: 2.5mm MALE into your device · 3.5mm FEMALE for your headphones.
Use it where the device has a 2.5mm socket:
Your headphones or earphones need an ordinary 3.5mm plug, which is what almost all of them have.
⚠️ If you need the opposite direction — a 3.5mm plug on your device and a 2.5mm plug on your headset — that is a different part and we stock it separately. Tell us which way round you are and we will send the right one.
⚠️ Stereo listening only, and this matters. A passive adapter connects contact to contact; it cannot rewire anything. So it will not reliably carry a microphone, and it must not be used to convert a balanced 2.5mm output on a portable music player to an ordinary 3.5mm headphone connection — those carry their channels differently. If your device or headset has a microphone or a balanced output, tell us what it is and we will confirm the right part before you order.
