Choosing a usb adapter comes down to two things, and getting either one wrong is the commonest reason a part gets sent back: which way round it goes, and which end is the plug.
Direction first. An adapter that lets a USB-A accessory work on a USB-C laptop is not the same part as one that lets a USB-C accessory work on an older USB-A port. They look similar in a photograph and they are not interchangeable.
Then gender. A male plug goes into a socket; a female socket accepts a plug. A usb c to usb adapter with the wrong gender at either end simply will not connect to anything.
