Description

A USB C coupler solves a problem with no other tidy answer: two cables that both end in a plug, and nothing to join them with. It is a short barrel with a socket at each end, and it turns two leads you already own into one longer one without buying a third cable.

What a USB C coupler is actually for

People reach for one of these for three reasons, and it is worth knowing which one is yours before you order.

The first is length. A metre of charging cable that stops half a metre short of the powerpoint, and a spare lead in the drawer that would close the gap. A USB C coupler joins them in a second and costs a fraction of a new lead.

The second is a gender problem. A dock, a wall plate, a car mount or a desk grommet that presents a plug where you needed a socket. A USB C female to female adapter turns that plug back into a port.

The third is wear. Charging ports fail from thousands of insertions, and replacing one on a laptop is a repair bill. Leaving a USB C coupler permanently in the port means the cheap part takes the wear instead of the expensive one.

What it will and will not carry

This USB C coupler female to female is rated for charging and everyday data, and that is the honest limit of it. Power Delivery passes straight through, so a phone, tablet or laptop charges at the rate the cable and charger already allow. General file transfer, keyboards, mice, audio and storage all work as normal, which covers most of what a USB C female to female adapter ever gets asked to do.

What no coupler can do is carry a certified high-speed link. Thunderbolt and USB4 hold their headline data rates over a single tested cable, two metres at most and often considerably less, because every additional connector in the path adds insertion loss the standard does not budget for. Joining two cables through any coupler puts the connection outside what those certifications cover, whoever makes it. If you are driving an eGPU, an 8K display or a fast external drive, use one continuous cable rated for the job — our Thunderbolt 4 extension cable is the right product for a short run, and the active Thunderbolt 4 cable handles longer ones.

We would rather tell you that before you order than after.

Build quality

This USB C coupler is built as a single moulded shell with a metal connector shroud at each end, so there is no seam to work loose when a cable is pulled sideways. Both sockets are full 24-pin USB-C, not the cut-down 16-pin variety that some cheap adapters use, which is what allows Power Delivery negotiation to pass through intact rather than dropping the connection back to a slow default.

The whole USB C coupler female to female is small enough to live in a laptop bag or a glovebox, and light enough that it does not hang off the port when a cable is plugged in at an angle.

Compatibility

A USB C female to female adapter is defined by its connector rather than by any particular device, so a USB C coupler suits almost anything with a USB-C socket regardless of who made it. The list below is what we have confirmed rather than everything that will physically fit.
