Description

A usb c to usb adapter lets a phone, tablet or laptop with a USB-C port accept a standard USB-A plug — a flash drive, a keyboard, a mouse, a controller, a card reader. It is a rigid stub: the USB-A socket sits directly on the USB-C plug, with no lead between them.

⚠️ OTG is something your device does, not something the adapter does

This is the one thing worth understanding before you buy a usb c to usb adapter, and almost no listing says it.

OTG — On-The-Go — lets a phone or tablet act as the host instead of the guest. Normally the computer you plug a phone into is in charge; OTG flips that, so the phone supplies the power and runs the peripheral.

⚠️ A usb c to usb adapter is passive and has no chip in it. If the device supports OTG it works; if it does not, nothing you plug in will do anything. Practically every Android phone and tablet of the last decade supports it, as does every iPad and iPhone with a USB-C port — and a laptop is a host by definition.

On a type c to usb adapter, USB 3.0, USB 3.1 Gen 1 and USB 3.2 Gen 1 are the same 5Gbps

Three names for one standard, renamed twice — which is why a type c to usb adapter can appear to have three different speeds.

⭐ 5Gbps is roughly ten times USB 2.0’s 480Mbps — on a good flash drive, the difference between a minute and ten minutes for a few gigabytes of video.

⚠️ Both ends have to support it. A 5Gbps usb c to usb adapter with a USB 2.0 flash drive in it runs at USB 2.0 speed — the chain moves at the pace of its slowest part, and that part is almost always the drive.

What a usb c to usb adapter will and will not power

Flash drives, keyboards, mice, controllers, card readers, headsets and USB microphones all draw very little and work straight away.

⚠️ A bus-powered external hard drive is the one to be careful with. A spinning 2.5-inch drive needs a lot of current to start and a phone limits how much it hands out, so it may mount, drop out, or do nothing. A laptop will usually run one; a phone often will not. An SSD draws far less and is the safer choice through a usb c to usb adapter.

Which way round it goes, because both directions exist

This is the usb c male to usb female adapter: a USB-C plug and a USB-A socket. The plug goes into your phone, tablet or laptop; the USB-A device goes into the socket.

⚠️ The opposite part — USB-A plug, USB-C socket — is a different adapter, for putting a USB-C device into an older computer. The two look alike and are not interchangeable, so tell us what is at each end and we will say which you need.

What we are not claiming

That it charges anything fast. A usb c to usb adapter carries whatever the two devices negotiate, and a USB-A socket is not a fast-charging path — it is a data part.

That every drive is readable. A drive formatted NTFS may not mount on Android or iOS — a formatting question rather than a hardware one, and no usb c to usb adapter can change it.

What it works with

Any device with a USB-C port that supports USB OTG host mode, taking any standard USB-A plug.

  • Android phones and tablets — Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, OPPO, Motorola, Xiaomi, Nothing
  • iPhone 15 and later, and every USB-C iPad — iPad Pro, Air, mini and the base model
  • Windows laptops, MacBooks and Chromebooks — a laptop is always a host, so OTG never comes into it
  • Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck — for a wired controller, a keyboard or a USB drive
  • USB-C monitors, docks and single-board computers with a spare USB-C port

And on the USB-A side: flash drives, card readers, keyboards, mice, wired game controllers, headsets, USB microphones, printers, label printers, MIDI keyboards and powered USB hubs.

What it will not do

It will not plug into a computer’s USB-A port. Its own USB-A end is a socket, and two sockets do not join — that job needs the opposite adapter, which we also stock.

It will not make a device support OTG. The part is passive and there is nothing in it to add the feature. If a phone does not do OTG, no adapter changes that.

It will not reliably run a bus-powered spinning hard drive off a phone. The drive’s start-up current is often more than a phone will supply. A laptop usually manages it and an SSD is the safer choice either way — tell us the drive and we will say what to expect.

It will not fast-charge anything. A USB-A socket is not a fast-charging path, and this is a data part.
