Beats changed the styling of its cables partway through the range. The earlier generation — Solo HD, Solo 2, Studio, Studio 2.0, Mixr, Pro and Executive — shipped with a flat, glossy red cable with black fittings and red accents. The later ones went round, matte and black.

That is the whole choice. Nothing about fitment turns on it.
A 3.5mm plug at each end, gold-plated, four-conductor. The fourth conductor is what carries the microphone — a three-conductor lead cannot.
One end is a right-angle plug. That goes into the headphones, where a straight plug sticks out and catches every time you turn your head. The straight end goes into the phone, laptop or whatever you are listening on.
⚠️ On a lead with a microphone the two ends are not interchangeable. Put it in the wrong way round and the music plays perfectly while the button and the mic do nothing — which is why almost nobody works out what is wrong. If your remote has stopped responding, swap the ends before you assume anything is broken.

⚠️ It is a single button, not the three-button remote the earlier cable had. There is no volume control on this lead — your volume stays on the phone or the headphones.
⭐ There is a quiet advantage in that. Volume buttons on an in-line remote use different signalling on Apple and Android hardware, and they routinely fail to work when the two are mixed. A single button sidesteps the whole problem — play, pause, skip and answer work the same on both.
Losing the lead is how most people end up here. These cables live loose in a bag, and the headphones are useless without one.
A spare for the second bag is the other common reason — one at the desk, one in the backpack.
And a frayed cable near the plug is worth replacing before it takes the socket with it.
Better sound. A passive cable carries the signal; it does not improve it. Anyone selling you a $15 lead on sound quality is selling you something that is not there. What a good one gives you is a plug that stays put and a jacket that does not split.
