Three different parts all get called an hdmi adapter, and picking the wrong one of the three is the usual reason something arrives and does nothing at all.
An adapter changes the plug shape — full size to mini or micro, or male to female — while the signal stays HDMI the whole way through. An extension adds length to a run that is already HDMI at both ends. A converter changes the signal itself, HDMI to VGA or to composite, and that needs electronics inside rather than wiring alone.
If the sockets at both ends are HDMI and you simply need more reach, an hdmi extension cable is the part you want. If one end is a different standard altogether, no hdmi adapter will bridge it and you need a converter.
