Description

An hdmi female to female coupler joins two HDMI cables end to end. A socket at each end, nothing in between but gold-plated contacts, and no power required.

⚠️ What an hdmi female to female coupler does, and what it does not

It joins. It does not boost.

The most misunderstood product in the HDMI range, so bluntly: it lets you make one long run out of two cables you already own. It does not improve how far HDMI can travel.

Every joint costs a little signal. Two 5m cables through an hdmi female to female coupler is a 10m run with an extra junction in it — slightly worse than a single 10m cable, not better.

⭐ So the right use is when you already have the cables — a lead run through a wall or under carpet, needing another two metres on the end. Buying two cables and a coupler instead of one longer cable is the wrong way round, and we would rather say so than sell you three things.

When an hdmi female to female adapter is exactly right

Joining an in-wall cable to a device — the hard part is done and the tail is short.

Rescuing a run you cannot replace — through conduit, behind cabinetry, under floorboards, where pulling a new cable costs a day.

Changing the last metre when a device moves, instead of redoing the whole run.

Repairing a damaged end — a cable with one broken plug becomes usable again with an hdmi coupler and a short lead.

⭐ In all four the alternative is not a better cable — it is an afternoon of work. That is what this ten-dollar part is worth.

Female at both ends, which is the bit people get wrong

Both openings are sockets. You plug a standard HDMI cable into each side.

⚠️ It will not plug into your television. A TV input is already a socket, and two sockets do not join. To get from a socket to a socket you need a cable — and to change direction or clear a wall, a right-angle adapter is the part you want.

What an hdmi female to female coupler passes through

Everything the cables at either end carry. An hdmi coupler has no electronics, no chip and no opinion about the signal — video, audio, ARC, CEC and HDR all travel through it unchanged.

⚠️ At very high bandwidth the joint starts to matter. For 1080p and everyday 4K this hdmi female to female adapter is unremarkable and reliable. For 8K or 48Gbps runs, ask us — we stock an aluminium coupler built and rated for that, and on a run that demanding it is the one to use.

No power, no settings, nothing to configure

Plug both cables into the hdmi female to female adapter and it works. No driver, no menu, no firmware.

⭐ Which is also why it cannot fail in an interesting way. A passive joint either makes contact or it does not, so if a joined run misbehaves the cause is almost always the total length or one of the two cables.

What we are not claiming

That it extends HDMI’s reach. See above — it joins, and a joint is a small cost rather than a gain. Anything sold as extending HDMI over long distances is an active device with a transmitter and a receiver, and it costs many times this.

That it converts anything. HDMI in, HDMI out, and nothing else.

That it improves the picture. A passive joint is at best invisible.

What it joins

Any two cables with a standard HDMI Type A male plug, from any source to any display.

  • Televisions, monitors and projectors — joining an in-wall or in-conduit run to a short tail at either end
  • Set-top boxes, streaming sticks, Blu-ray players and games consoles — PlayStation, Xbox, Switch
  • Soundbars and AV receivers, including ARC and eARC runs
  • Laptops and desktops driving a screen across a room
  • Cameras, capture cards and monitors on a set, where cable runs get rebuilt constantly
  • Digital signage and conference rooms, where the cable is already in the wall

What it will not do

It will not plug into a television, a console or any other socket — both of its own openings are sockets, and two sockets do not join. That job needs a cable.

It will not extend HDMI beyond what the cables can already do. A joined run is the sum of both cables plus a junction, and the junction is a small cost rather than a gain. If the total run is long and the picture drops out, the answer is a shorter run or an active extender, and we will say so.
