The QuietComfort 3 is a twenty-year-old set of headphones that a lot of people are still using, and the thing that fails on them is never the drivers. It is the lead. A bose qc3 cable costs fifteen dollars, takes two seconds to fit, and buys another few years out of a pair that still sounds good.
The QC3 takes a 2.5mm plug at the earcup and a standard 3.5mm plug at the phone, laptop or aeroplane seat. That pairing is what makes a bose qc3 cable a specific item rather than any aux lead from the drawer — the 2.5mm end is the small one, and a 3.5mm plug will not go into it no matter how firmly you press.
So before you order a bose qc3 cable, check the earcup. If you have measured the socket and it is 3.5mm at both ends, you have a different Bose model and we stock leads for those too. Send us a photo of the earcup socket and we will tell you which one you need, which takes us a minute and saves you a return.
This bose qc3 cable is 1.5 metres: long enough to run from a coat pocket or a seat-back socket to your head with slack to spare, short enough not to loop around the armrest. A bose quietcomfort 3 cable that is three metres long is not a better cable, it is a worse one — the lead Bose shipped was about this length for a reason, and the extra is only ever in the way.
Headphone leads fail in two places: where the cable enters the plug, and inside the plug itself. Both are flex failures, and both come from the lead being pulled sideways rather than straight out — which is what happens every time it snags on a seat arm or gets wound round the earcups for storage.
So the honest lifespan of any bose qc3 cable depends more on how it is handled than on what it cost. Unplug by the plug rather than the cord, and coil it loosely rather than winding it tight, and a fifteen-dollar lead will outlast several careless ones.
Gold-plated contacts on both ends of this bose quietcomfort 3 cable resist the corrosion that makes an old lead crackle when you move it, and the jacket is the tangle-resistant kind rather than the rubber that welds itself into knots in a bag. Neither of those is exotic; they are just the two things that decide whether a bose qc3 cord lasts six months or five years.
Worth knowing because it catches people out: the QC3’s active noise cancelling runs off its own battery in the earcup and has nothing to do with the lead. A bose qc3 cable does not affect it either way. If the noise cancelling has stopped working, that is the battery or the headphones, and a new lead will not fix it — we would rather tell you that than sell you one on a false hope.
What a new bose qc3 cable does fix is the crackle, the channel that cuts out when you turn your head, and the sound that only comes through when you hold the plug at an angle.
This is not a manufacturer-branded product. It is a bose quietcomfort 3 cable built to the same connector specification, at about a third of what the branded part costs when you can find one at all — and the QC3 has been out of production long enough that finding one is the harder half.

Made for the Bose QuietComfort 3 (QC3) — the 2.5mm socket in the earcup, 3.5mm at the source end.
The 3.5mm end plugs into:
Check the earcup socket before ordering. Bose used the small 2.5mm socket across a run of models and the 3.5mm socket across others, and the two are not interchangeable — a 3.5mm plug will not enter a 2.5mm socket. If you are unsure, send us a photo of the socket and we will identify it. It takes us a minute and it is the difference between a working lead and a return.
Other Bose models with the same 2.5mm socket. Independent sellers commonly list one lead as fitting most of the QuietComfort range, and for plain stereo audio that is broadly true where the plug physically fits. We will not print a model list we have not verified, so if you own a different QuietComfort and want to know whether this lead suits it, ask us and we will check that model specifically.
Noise cancelling is not affected by the lead. The QC3’s active noise cancelling runs from its own battery in the earcup. A replacement lead restores the audio; it cannot restore noise cancelling that has stopped working, and nothing sold as a cable can.
