Description

A usb car charger turns the 12V socket in a car into two USB ports. This one is a flush-fitting metal barrel that sits almost level with the dashboard, with Quick Charge 3.0 on both outputs and 30W in total.

What Quick Charge 3.0 actually does for you

A usb car charger with Quick Charge raises the voltage rather than the current, so a compatible phone fills faster without the cable getting hot.

⭐ Quick Charge is Qualcomm’s standard, so it works on phones with a Qualcomm chip — most Android handsets from Samsung, Motorola, OPPO, Xiaomi and Sony. On anything else this quick charge car charger falls back to ordinary 5V charging, safely and automatically.

⚠️ An iPhone will not use Quick Charge. It charges at normal speed from this, which is the same speed it gets from most car chargers.

⚠️ Two USB-A ports, and what that means

Both outputs are the rectangular USB-A type.

⚠️⚠️ That means no USB Power Delivery. PD needs a USB-C port at both ends, so this usb car charger cannot fast-charge a USB-C laptop or run PD on a phone. It is a phone-and-tablet charger, not a laptop one.

⭐ What it is very good at is the thing people actually do in cars: two phones, or a phone and a dash camera, or a phone and a passenger’s tablet, from one socket.

30W in total, not 30W each

On this baseus car charger the number is the combined output across both ports.

⚠️ Use one port and you get the full Quick Charge rate. Use both and the 30W is shared, so two phones charge at a sensible speed rather than two fast ones. Every dual car charger behaves this way and most listings do not say so.

⚠️ The socket matters more than the charger

A 12V socket that is switched with the ignition stops charging when the engine stops.

⭐ That is usually what people want, because a charger left in a permanently live socket can flatten a battery over a week. Check which kind your car has before blaming a usb car charger for not charging overnight.

⚠️ And a loose socket is the commonest fault of all. A usb car charger that flickers is nearly always sitting in a worn socket, or one with grime in it.

Built to sit flush

Aluminium barrel, almost level with the dashboard when fitted — which is not how most usb car charger designs sit.

⭐ A protruding baseus car charger, or any other, is the one that gets knocked, and the one that eventually breaks the socket. A flush fit is worth more in a car than in any other setting.

What we are not claiming

That it does Power Delivery. Two USB-A ports cannot. A laptop needs a USB-C PD car charger and that is a different part.

That every phone charges faster. Quick Charge needs a compatible phone; without one, this quick charge car charger is an ordinary good 5V charger.

That 30W reaches one device while both ports are busy. The full rate goes to one port at a time, as on every dual usb car charger.

What it charges

Two USB devices at once, from a 12V or 24V vehicle socket.

  • Android phones with a Qualcomm chip — Samsung Galaxy, Motorola, OPPO, Xiaomi, Sony, at full Quick Charge 3.0 speed
  • iPhones and iPads — at ordinary speed, which is what they take from most car chargers
  • Tablets — Samsung, Lenovo and the rest
  • Dash cameras and GPS units — the second port’s usual job
  • Bluetooth speakers, earbuds and headphones
  • Power banks, head torches and bike lights

⭐ And it takes any USB-A cable you already have, which is most of them.

What it will not do

It will not do USB Power Delivery. Both ports are USB-A and PD needs USB-C — so it will not fast-charge a USB-C laptop, and a laptop needs a PD car charger instead.

It will not give 30W to one device while both ports are in use. The 30W is the combined figure; use one port for the full rate.

It will not fast-charge an iPhone. Apple does not use Quick Charge. It charges at normal speed, safely.

It will not charge with the ignition off if your car switches its 12V socket — that is the car, not the charger, and it is usually the behaviour you want.

It will not fix a worn socket. A charger that flickers is nearly always a loose or dirty socket.
