A usb4 cable is the one lead that does everything at once — 40Gbps of data, 240W of power and 8K video, down a single USB-C connection. Most cables in a drawer do one of those things well and the others badly.
Here is the trap, and almost everyone falls into it.
USB-C is a connector shape, not a speed. The cable that came with your phone charger has the same plug at each end and looks identical to this one, and it almost certainly carries data at USB 2.0 — 480Mbps, which is roughly one eightieth of what this does. It will charge perfectly well and then take twenty minutes to copy what should take fifteen seconds.
You cannot tell by looking. That is why a usb4 cable is a different purchase from a usb c to usb c cable bought on price, and why plugging an external drive into the wrong one feels like the drive is broken when the cable is the problem.
External SSDs and NVMe enclosures. This is where the difference is obvious — a fast drive on a USB 2.0 lead runs at a crawl.
eGPU enclosures and docks, where the bandwidth between the laptop and the box is the whole limit.
8K at 60Hz, or dual 4K displays, using Display Stream Compression. The video passes through DisplayPort Alt Mode alongside the data and the power.
Backward compatible with Thunderbolt 4 and 3, USB 3.2 and plain USB 2.0 — it runs at whatever the slower end supports.
Worth being straight about, because it is where disappointment comes from.
This 240w usb c cable is rated to the top of USB Power Delivery, but 240W requires a PD 3.1 EPR charger running at 48V, and chargers that do are still uncommon. Plug it into a 100W brick and you get 100W. Nothing is faulty; the cable is simply not the limiting part.
The rating matters because it means the cable will not be the limit later either, which on something you keep for years is the point.
This is the part to get right before ordering.
At 40Gbps, passive copper does not travel far. The one-metre version carries the full rate comfortably. Longer runs at that speed need active electronics in the connectors — and a longer cable that is not active will quietly run slower rather than tell you.
If you are buying for charging and video, length is a free choice. If you are buying for 40Gbps to a drive or an enclosure, tell us the length you need and we will confirm what it will actually carry. That conversation takes two minutes and prevents the only complaint this sort of cable generates.
Braided nylon over the jacket and aluminium alloy connector housings. At this bandwidth the shielding and the tolerances inside the connector do real work — they are most of what separates this from a 240w usb c cable that charges fine and drops data packets.
Reversible at both ends, plug and play, nothing to install.
