A 3.5 mm jack to 6.35 mm jack adapter is a short gold-plated barrel: a 6.35mm plug at one end, a 3.5mm socket at the other. It lets ordinary headphones or earbuds plug into the big quarter-inch socket on an amplifier, mixer, audio interface or keyboard.
This adapter steps UP. The small socket takes your 3.5mm plug; the large plug goes into the equipment.
If you need the opposite — a 6.35mm plug from studio headphones going into a phone or laptop — that is the other adapter, and it will not work in place of this one. The plug and socket are reversed and nothing about them is reversible.
Look at what you are holding. A 3.5mm plug in your hand and a big socket on the gear means this is the part. A 3.5 mm jack to 6.35 mm jack adapter only ever works in that one direction, and the two versions cost the same, so the only way to get it wrong is not to check.
The quarter-inch socket has not gone anywhere. It is still standard on almost everything made for music rather than for phones, which is why a 3.5 mm to 6.35 mm adapter outlives most of the gear it plugs into.
It is also the cheapest way to keep using headphones you already like. Studio monitoring headphones are expensive and last for years; the earbuds in your pocket cost nothing and are already in your hand. Either way the socket on the amplifier is the wrong size, and a 3.5 to 6.35 adapter is the whole fix.
The contacts are gold-plated. On a signal this small that matters more than it would on a power connector — a headphone signal is a few milliwatts, and a corroded contact on an analogue line shows up as crackle when the plug is moved, not as a clean failure.
It is also a connector that gets left in place for years on the back of an amplifier in an Australian summer. Gold does not oxidise, so the joint stays quiet.
The barrel is knurled, so it can be fitted and removed by hand without pliers and without twisting the lead. On gear that lives on a stand or behind a desk that is worth more than it sounds — the usual way these get damaged is being levered out sideways.
No electronics, no power, nothing to go wrong. The signal passes through unchanged.
Stereo is preserved — three conductors in, three conductors out, left and right both carried.
⚠️ What it does not do: it is not a TRS-to-TRS balanced converter and it is not a microphone adapter. It carries a stereo headphone signal between two sizes of the same connector. If your gear needs a balanced line, that is a different part.
The large connector is 6.35mm, which is a quarter of an inch. It is frequently written as 6.5mm, including in places that should know better, and 6.5mm is not a real audio connector size. If you are comparing listings and one says 6.5, it almost certainly means this.
The small one is 3.5mm, sometimes called a mini-jack or an aux connector.
So a 3.5 mm to 6.35 mm adapter, a 3.5mm to 1/4 inch adapter and a quarter-inch headphone adapter are all the same object. The names vary; the part does not.

Compatible with any equipment that has a 6.35mm (quarter-inch) headphone or line socket, including:
At the other end: a 3.5mm socket, so any standard headphones, earbuds or 3.5mm lead.
⚠️ Check the direction before you order. This one has the 6.35mm plug and the 3.5mm socket — it takes a small plug and fits a big socket. If you need it the other way round, with a 6.35mm socket to take studio headphones into a phone or laptop, that is the opposite adapter.
Stereo is carried through. Three conductors at both ends, left and right both present.
⛔ Not a balanced-line or microphone adapter. It converts between two sizes of headphone connector and nothing else.
